Romeo the golden retriever has been rescued after surviving nine days under rubble from a devastating earthquake in central Italy.

The dog first appeared bewildered when firefighters pulled him free, but he was soon wagging his tail and checking out the much-changed surroundings.

The rescuers said they heard the dog barking as they were helping the pet's owners retrieve belongings from the damaged house.

The 6.2 magnitude quake shook a lot of historic buildings to rubble in Italy's central region.

Of the 292 confirmed dead, 231 were found in Amatrice. In all, 21 children died. A number of foreigners were among the dead, including 11 Romanians and three Britons.
