The United States Ambassador to New Zealand will soon be heading home after a decision by President-elect Donald Trump's transition team.

Mr Trump's team ordered all politically appointed ambassadors installed by outgoing President Barack Obama to return home before Inauguration Day on January 20.

Mark Gilbert released a sweet selfie compliation video of his time in New Zealand and Samoa titled 'Happy New Zealand trails - Selfies across New Zealand and Samoa'.

He is also the US Ambassador to the Pacific Island.

Mr Gilbert served for two years in the role alongside his wife Nancy Gilbert, and he's the first former Major League Baseball player to become a US Ambassador.

He played professional baseball for eight seasons, including for the Chicago White Sox in 1985.

"It has been an honor to serve as the US Ambassador to New Zealand & Samoa", Mr Gilbert said alongside the video.

He worked in finance before taking up the Ambassador role, including positions at UBS, Barclays and Goldman Sachs.
