A sinkhole has opened up in a prestigious suburb of Point Piper in Sydney forcing at least four homes to be evacuated.

The suburb is also home to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's mansion. His house, less than a kilometre away, was not affected.

Heavy rain has hit the Sydney area over the last few days.

Torrential rain dumped at least 50mm of rain leading to flash flooding in some areas.

A local council spokesperson says emergency services were quick to respond.

"Council have engaged technical engineers to assess the site and prepare a report for council," they said.
