Several teachers at a Texas school are in trouble after a 13-year-old student was handed a certificate saying she was "most likely to become a terrorist".

The incident happened at Anthony Aguirre Junior High the same day a terrorist blew himself up at an Ariana Grande concert in the UK, killing 22.

"They just found it as a joke," Lizeth Villanueva told local news outlet KHOU.

The awards ceremony was meant as a joke, and a number of teachers laughed as students were given mock awards - including Lizeth's.

"[A teacher] said that some people might get offended, but she doesn't really care about our feelings. She was laughing about it."

Lizeth's mother didn't see the funny side.

"I read it twice. I'm like, 'What is this?!'" Ena Hernandez told KHOU.

The principal personally apologised to Lizeth, who has never been in trouble before and has a good academic record.

Lizeth wants them fired, "or something", and hasn't been back to school since, USA Today reported.

The local education authority said the teachers were being disciplined, and is still investigating the incident.
