Dashcam footage has captured a vicious road rage assault in Australia.

A male driver can be seen punching a woman in the face after the two confront each other in the incident at Lake Munmorah on New South Wales' Central Coast.

The man gets out of his car at the traffic lights and assaults the unsuspecting woman.

The attack happened after the female driver had tossed several items out of her window at the man's car, the man who filmed the encounter said on Facebook.

"I don't care what your reason, it is not ok to hit a woman," Dwayne Pillidge posted.

After the assault, the woman jumps into her car and reverses near the man, causing him to leap for safety.

Reaction to the video was mixed.

John Burke posted that the woman deserved it.

"She was mouthing off at him and threw things at him and his car ... She then tried to run him down by reversing at him ... Want equality..you reap what you sow."

Deb Maddigan posted that she was more concerned that the truck driver was "more interested in filming it rather than calling the cops to report the piece of filth".

No one told police about the incident but they're keen to identify those involved.

"Inquiries are now underway into a suspected road rage-related assault on the Central Coast," NSW Police said in a statement.
