Two people have been confrimed dead after a mass shooting in New Mexico on Tuesday (NZ Time).
Police surrounded a public library in Clovis after reports of a gunman firing on members of the public inside.
A man was taken into custody by police "without incident" Clovis City manager Tom Phelps said.
Three victims were taken to a local hospital, the extent of their injures wasn't disclosed.
It's not clear if the man taken into custody is the gunman.
Vanessa Aguirre told The Eastern New Mexico News she was inside the library when a man came inside and "started to shoot" into the air.
"It all happened so fast," she said. "We took off fast. My purse is still in there."
Another local in the building across the street, Kim Tipton, said she saw police turn up shortly after 4pm (local time).
"Their guns were drawn, AK-whatever they were, they were drawn."
