Cell services in a popular Cook Islands holiday destination are down after a fire destroyed one of the main cellular hubs on Sunday.

The Cook Islands Prime Minister's Office told RNZ all cell services in Rarotonga could be down for up to three weeks after a blaze destroyed the main Bluesky cellular hub. It's taken out the mobile core network, satellite connectivity and international calling facilities.

Locals report that some businesses have been told it could take several weeks to restore.

Services are currently down in Muri, one of the island's most popular tourist areas.
