Members of an Australian Facebook group for parents have balked at being charged a $10 fee for membership.

'Mum's the word' is a closed group where parents share advice and support.

Until now, it's been free to use.

However, the group's administrator recently made a lengthy post explaining that there will now be a "one off" fee of AUS$10 for all existing members and all members looking to join the group, which would add up to over NZ$250,000 if everyone paid.

While the admin describes the fee as mandatory, they won't remove anyone that doesn't pay, according to Yahoo News.

She claims that running the group is "a 24/7 job", which sees her "get messages on weekend, late at night and at 5:30am in the morning".

"If you have ever found this group useful, if it's ever helped you find a babysitter, plumber, cleaning tip, baby support, parenting advice or anything at all and you want to give back just click this safe and secure paypal link," she says.

Members of the group were quick to voice their concern, with one user commenting: "I highly doubt you will have new members joining a page where they are charged with zero idea whether it will be worth it."

"Shame, cause this page was so good. Time will tell if it remains so," added another.
