Hundreds of cars destroyed in seven-storey Liverpool parking complex blaze

Hundreds of cars were destroyed in a huge seven-storey blaze in a Liverpool carpark on New Year's Eve.

The blaze was so fierce it reduced the vehicles to shells and even melted some of the concrete floor, rendering the building unstable.

Fire services told local media a fire in a car started the blaze, which went on to destroy an estimated 1400 in total. More than 20 fire crews battled the flames.

Merseyside police said no lives were lost, "thanks to all of our partners… joint working at its best".

However, it left hundreds visiting the city for a horse show nearby stranded. A temporary enquiry centre was set up at a nearby hotel for those who couldn't get home.
