Dramatic footage has emerged from Melbourne of a violent end to a chase between police and a white SUV.
In the clip, officers can be seen smashing in the windows of the car during an arrest in the middle of a busy intersection on Northcote Rd, Armadale.
The SUV with a suspended registration was caught running a red light and speeding along Merri Parade on New Year's Day, police say.
After police signalled it to pull over a short pursuit began, with the SUV driving along tram tracks for part of the chase.
"As soon as that happened they drove for a bit on the tracks and it turned into a police chase," one witness told 7 News.
The chase ended in the intersection on Northcote Rd, where traffic was brought to a standstill as officers arrested three occupants of the vehicle - but not after a struggle, in which officers are seen hitting the suspects with batons.
The 32-year-old driver has now been charged with traffic offences and reckless conduct endangering life.
Two passengers, a 28-year-old woman and 15-year-old boy, were released without charge.
