14-year-old arrested following assault and carjacking in west Auckland

Police have taken a 14-year-old boy into custody this afternoon after he allegedly assaulted and carjacked a woman in the west Auckland suburb of New Lynn.

Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small says the 62-year-old victim was approached by the alleged offender at around 1.30pm while she was sitting in her parked vehicle outside Lynn Mall.

An altercation then took place and the victim fell to the ground.

The alleged offender then drove off in the victim's vehicle.

The woman was found by a member of the public on the ground, coming in and out of consciousness.

She is now in Auckland Hospital with a serious head injury but in a stable condition.

Police received a number of calls from members of the public regarding the victim's vehicle being driven erratically on the South Western motorway towards Counties Manukau.

Detective Small reported that it was being driven the wrong way on the motorway and was driving dangerously.

The vehicle was seen pulling into an address in Mangere, however the offender has fled from the scene on-foot.

Police staff carried out a number of area enquiries and have located the alleged offender shortly after.

Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small says police are not looking for anybody else in relation to the incident.

The 14-year-old will face a number of charges and is expected to appear in the Youth Court tomorrow.

Police are now asking any members of the public who may have seen a 2000 blue Toyota RAV4 being driven between the hours of 1.30pm and 3pm in both the New Lynn area and on the South Western motorway.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Mike Clubb on 09 839 0600.
