Police have lodged an appeal against former Wellington Lions player Losi Filipo after the Solicitor-General opened the way to reviewing his discharge without conviction over four assaults.
The 18-year-old had his contract ended with the rugby franchise on Tuesday following intense pressure over the attack on four people which happened in October 2015.
Family First wrote to Solicitor-General Una Jagose urging her to review the case which had caused outrage after Newshub revealed the story.
In a media statement on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Crown Law Office said police can appeal the judge's decision on a question of law.
An application has been filed in the Wellington High Court, but a date has not been set.
Police would not comment further on the case.
