Police have charged 23-year-old Bodi McKee with murder following a fatal shooting in south Auckland on Saturday.

He was located on Monday morning at an address in Takanini and was questioned by police.

He has now been charged with murder and a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Thirty two-year-old Leslie Putt was found with a gunshot wound on the driveway of a Manurewa address, but emergency services were unable to revive him.

Both the victim and McKee are known to the police.

"Shortly after the incident, McKee apologised to the occupants of the address and then left," Detective Inspector Gary Lendrum said on Saturday.

He is now speaking with detectives with charges pending.

Detective Insp Lendrum earlier said police are trying to work out why the two met on Saturday morning, and says they are unsure whether the incident was gang- or drug-related.

Bodi McKee will appear in Manurewa District Court this afternoon.
