Inorganic collections in Auckland are set to become safer and cleaner, as the council changes the way they are run.

This year, residents can call to organise a pick-up directly from their property, instead of having to leave it on the kerbside as has happened up until now.

The council says the new method be a huge improvement.

"There were a number of issues with the previous collections mainly around the look of the kerbside," says waste solutions manager Ian Stupple. "A lot of illegal dumping in the piles and also a lot of health and safety issues, not just for our collectors but for the public."

Residents will be advised by pamphlet when their suburb is due for inorganic collection, and will then have ten days to make a booking.
