A 22-year-old foreign national has been identified as the man found dead on a Mount Maunganui beach this morning.
The body was found washed up on short around 6:30am today by someone walking on the beach.
Sergeant Cam Anderson says the man's body was found a few hundred meters south of Moturiki Island.
Police say the man is believed to have entered the water early this morning and was found floating in the surf.
They are still working to formally identify the man's body and his death has been referred to the coroner.
The beach cordon was lifted around 8:30am.
