A police investigation has been launched after the discovery of a burnt body in an area south of Auckland.

Police were called to the Kingseat area around 6:30am after a member of the public discovered the body while out walking their dog.

The Fire Service was subsequently called to deal with a small scrub fire, and have spent the morning dampening hot spots.

Police have now begun a scene examination and have brought in a specialist ladder appliance to enable them to take scene photos.

The death is being treated as unexplained and detectives, and forensics, along with fire investigators, are at the scene on McRobbie Road.

Police have been stopping members of the public driving along the road seeking more information.

A post mortem will be conducted this afternoon.
