Customs has described an attempt at smuggling eight kilograms of methamphetamine into the country as "unsophisticated".

A 26-year-old Canadian man was arrested yesterday in relation to importing a Class A drug. He had been living in Auckland and was caught trying to leave the country.

Manager of investigations Maurice O'Brien says the $8 million worth of meth was discovered in what was declared as an ornate footstool.

"In actual fact it was a crate that concealed 18 packages of methamphetamine, which also included concrete to give weight to the consignment."

The package was sent from the United States and seized at Auckland International Airport.

The man will now appear in court.
