Cancellations at Wellington Airport

Travellers flying into Wellington have had their flights cancelled or delayed after fog settled over the runway this afternoon.

An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said flights have now been cancelled for the evening.

The airline said an A320 service from Sydney to Wellington was diverted to Auckland.

A flight from Auckland to Wellington was diverted to Palmerston North and ten flights between Wellington and Auckland were cancelled.

More than 19 regional flights were cancelled.

The airport's terminals are packed with people.

Metservice forecaster Derek Holland says the fog is expected to stay over the airport all night with little change.

A very humid north-easterly flow over the North Island is responsible for the conditions, which Mr Holland says is very localised to the Wellington Airport area.
