An elderly woman has been killed after a vehicle was struck by falling rocks near Te Kuiti, south of Hamilton.
The incident occurred at about 10:30am when the car was travelling north on State Highway 3, approximately 12km from Piopio.
Two women were in the vehicle at the time. One escaped with minor injuries while the other, aged 76, died at the scene.
Police say the road at the scene is closed and will remain closed for several days while the area is made safe.
The victim's next-of-kin are yet to be contacted.
