Cemetery arrest: Families can 'move on'

The arrest of a woman for the desecration of children's graves in an Auckland cemetery last month will bring closure to the families, according to a local politician.

A 43-year-old woman has been charged after white crosses were pulled out of the ground at Papakura Cemetery last month. All up, around 70 graves were vandalised.

Papakura Local Board deputy chairman Michael Turner says it will allow the families of the deceased to move on.

"We're just very, very pleased for our residents who have got loved ones there, that they can now move on knowing that the final hurdle has been achieved."

Mr Turner says he understands the woman suffers from a mental illness.

Flowers and crosses of deceased children were strewn across the lawn at Papakura Cemetery on May 16.

"We had a team working full time on this case for weeks, and it's a great relief for them and for the families affected to have someone facing charges before the courts," Inspector Mark Rowbottom of Papakura police said yesterday.
