One person has died after a helicopter crashed in north Canterbury this morning.

The deceased was the pilot and sole occupant of the Robinson R22.

Emergency services along with the Westpac Rescue chopper were called to the scene, which is in rough country only accessible by four wheel drive, just before 9:30am.

The helicopter had been spraying in the area, inland from State Highway 1 near Domett, south of Cheviot. Emergency services were alerted to the crash by a loader driver.

The pilot was pronounced dead by ambulance staff at the scene. No other details are available at this stage.

Initial reports indicate the helicopter was on fire on the ground.
