Christchurch drink driver makes public apology

A drink driver has taken a shot at forgiveness by posting an apology ad in the local newspaper.

But he won't find out until his court appearance tomorrow if it was too late to say sorry.

Bay Aperahama Haika would like to apologise - a $179 public apology - for driving a vehicle under the influence.

In all, 77 words printed in black and white, in the local rag, twice this week.

It was the Christchurch demolition worker's chance to clear his conscience.

"Yeah it was just an apology to the public because it's not worth driving, aye, you know after drinking and that I just thought I'd put it out there but I didn't realise it was going to strike like this and helloooo," says Mr Aperahama.

The 55-year-old was caught drink driving before Christmas. He was more than four times over the limit when driving his partner home from the pub.

"I didn't know I was over the limit until I got to the police station," he says.

He's had a huge response from the advertisement. He says it's just not worth it and hopes others will learn from his mistakes.

"A lot of guys have kind of congratulated me on what I've done and they reckon its worth doing and hopefully it will open people's eyes," he says.

He's back behind the wheel after a 28-day suspension.

"And then tomorrow it might be my last day," he says.

He will appear before a judge to learn his punishment, which could see him off the roads for up to six months.
