Auckland Civil Defence will be testing out the tsunami warning system at midday on Sunday as part of its twice-yearly exercise.

Coastal areas will hear a series of tones to make sure the region's defences are in working order.

Auckland Civil Defence head of operations, Aaron Davis, is urging people not to worry if they hear the sirens.

"Quite often you don't get to use these things in real life, which is really good - but you still need to make sure the systems work and that when people hear them they actually know what to do," he says.

Mr Davis says it's a good time to check you have emergency packs ready in case there is a real disaster.
