Civilians told to stay off Defence Force training land

Four-wheel-drivers and motorcyclists are being urged to keep away from Defence Force land in Kaipara.

The Northland area is used by the military for bomb and explosives training, and despite warning signs, civilians have been using the range for 4-wheel driving practice.

Ngati Whatua spokesperson Margaret Kawharu says it's an accident waiting to happen.

"We know of one person who put a practice bomb in a backpack and brought it down on their motorbike and delivered it to us. It could have gone off," says Ms Kawharu.

The Defence Force says despite clear signage and monitoring many people still flout the law.
