A cyclist killed in Dunedin on Monday was the father of two children and a lecturer at the University of Otago.

Dr LiHong He, who police named yesterday, was killed by a truck and trailer unit while cycling down a Dunedin road.

Police say Mr He, who was a dentistry lecturer, was thought to have swerved to avoid a car door before being run down by the truck.

His boss Grey Seymour told The Press the department at the University was in shock.

“It's very sad and shocking for the whole school. He was well-liked by all the staff and his students,” he told the paper.

A Facebook page has been setup in Mr He’s honour, with hundreds of his students leaving their condolences.

“This page commemorates an inspirational teacher, a motivated researcher, a considerate colleague, a loving husband, an affectionate father and above all, an highly admirable human being that we have all grown to know and love,” the page reads.
