Dogs assemble for 42nd annual derby in Queenstown

Dogs from all over the lower half of the South Island congregated on Thursday for the 42nd annual DB Export Dog Derby.

A record 87 dogs - 56 country dogs and 31 townies - and their owners met up on the Remarkables Ski Area in Queenstown before being taken up the slopes.

Once taken up on chairlift in crisp sunny weather, the dogs were let loose to race back down the mountain to the finish line.

The dogs looked like a school of fish from the air, weaving and swirling against a backdrop of pure white.

Veteran entrants Daniel Price and Bart from Athol won the country division, with Josh Harrex and Chap from Alexandra and Carl Portegys and Boss from Queenstown coming second and third respectively.

Townies Sean Beal and Sox from Arrowtown won their division, with Brad Saville and Cliff and Tom Stokes and Mr Magoo from Queenstown coming second and third respectively.

The country dogs also competed in a mustering task.

The Queenstown Winter Festival ends on Sunday.
