A Dunedin athlete has broken the world record for cycling around the globe raising money for cancer research.

Andrew Nicholson was greeted by Guinness World Record timekeepers yesterday afternoon.

He completed the 29,000 kilometre journey in 123 days and is now looking forward to a break.

"It's rest up time. I always say that was the last goal, but there always ends up being something else, but no, it's rest up time."

Nicholson used the adventure to raise funds for the University of Otago's cancer research unit.
