Residents in the lower South Island may have had a shaky start to the morning, with a 6.0 magnitude earthquake hitting 160 km southwest of Snares Islands.

The quake is said to have caused "light shaking" near Roxburgh.

It was 10km deep.

Locals writing on the GeoNet Facebook page expressed concern, with Candice Edgarton saying "I don't think the shaking will ever stop here not for a long time at least we moved away from Chch to bottom South Island and haven't felt anything so I'm happy [sic]".

Shirley Knapp said "Okay Nature You can stop now !!! Or go play in another country".

And Anji Hoops said "ooh that's enough now".

The quake was originally measured at a magnitude of 4.4, but was revised to 5.3 and then 6.0.
