The Ministry of Education is defending the actions of the school involved in an alleged rape case.

Police and the Ministry of Education have confirmed they've investigated an incident where a 10-year-old boy allegedly raped another 10-year-old boy on school camp.

Both boys were attending the same Hamilton primary school when the incident took place at a school camp in April, Fairfax reports.

The mother of the alleged victims told Fairfax she was failed by the school and the Education Ministry over their handling of the incident.

Head of sector enablement and support at the Ministry Katrina Casey says it is a terrible situation for any parent to face.

"It's understandable that the mum of this boy is upset and angry about this alleged attack on her son."

Ms Casey says the school involved "did the most important things right".

"The most important thing for the safety and welfare of this boy, and for other children at the school was that police and CYFs were immediately informed, investigated the incident, and took any action required.

"This is what is prescribed by our justice system. That is exactly what happened," she says.

The Ministry of Education says the alleged offender was immediately suspended and is being home-schooled in the care of Child, Youth and Family.

Due to the age of the accused, no charges have been laid.
