An elderly man will be expecting a substantial bill after crashing his Mercedes-Benz into a half-a-million-dollar Lamborghini Aventador in Auckland's CBD.

The owner of the luxury Lamborghini told the New Zealand Herald while he was upset, he didn't want to yell at the man who had crashed into his "dream car".

"I mean it's a mistake, he didn't crash it and then run away, he was okay about it, he stayed around. I mean he had a pretty nice car too," he said.

The damage sustained by the vehicle was substantial, according to the Lamborghini owner -- and the collision was particularly unfortunate because of where the Mercedes had struck.

"He had to hit the axle, of all places he hit the axle so the whole wheel buckled, it was a bit of a mission getting it on the tow truck, it seems like it was damaged pretty badly so I'm going to have to order parts," he told the NZ Herald.

According to a witness, the Mercedes driver had dropped his parking ticket, and while he was picking it up his car had started rolling backwards.

The driver had then made an attempt to stop it moving any further, but instead put it into gear and had to watch as it careened into the Lamborghini parked opposite.

The damaged Lamborghini Aventador is believed to be worth $595,000.
