This weekend calls for celebration in the Waikato and Auckland, and there is plenty going on for those wanting to get out and about.

Last night marked the beginning of Auckland and Waikato's anniversary weekends, and festivals are well underway.

Aucklanders may have noticed a beam of light shining from the summit of Rangitoto last night – this was the beginning of the first Tamaki Herenga Waka Festival.

This morning the festival began with inter-tribal waka races from the New Zealand Maritime Museum basin, and throughout the weekend punters will get a chance to paddle a waka for themselves.

There will also be a chance to check out markets, food, village workshops and traditional workshops at the grounds.

Last night also marked the beginning of the Auckland International Buskers Festival at the Viaduct Harbour.

People can expect to see street performers throughout Auckland's waterfront and Aotea Square over the weekend, with shows beginning at midday and night shows running on Saturday and Sunday.

Lovers of seafood can check out the ASB Auckland Seafood Festival at Halsey Wharf, while watching celebrity chef demonstrations and live music.

The fun doesn't stop in Auckland however, with thousands of Kiwis heading to Waikato's Mystery Creek Events Centre for a weekend of music with Festival One.

The festival began a year ago, born out of the end of Parachute music festival, and has a range of Christian music artists, and creative arts.
