Fanuary women's equivalent to Movember

A controversial fundraising scheme Fanuary, which has been labelled as tasteless by the Cancer Society, has now been snapped up by an alternative charity that does not share its views.

Inspired by the moustache-growing month Movember, the Fanuary campaign is calling for Kiwi women to go without bikini waxes in January, all the name of raising awareness of gynaecological cancers.

The Cancer Society initially agreed to accept donations from the campaign, but then distanced themselves from it, even threatening legal action if their name was used.

Lynne St Clair-Chapman from the Cancer Society said they were horrified after viewing the website, and said the campaign bordered on being pornographic.

Organisers say that was never their intention, and have signed on the Women for Women charity who were unphased by the controversy.

Kim McCulloch from Women for Women says they are happy to help out and say it is all for a good cause.
