An Ashburton farmer has been killed after crashing a quad bike into a fence.

Johnathan Madera, 50, was treated for his injuries but died at the scene.

Police said the accident happened on a farm on Blackford Rd in the early hours of Sunday, September 25. 

WorkSafe NZ has been notified and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

Quad bikes are involved in about 28 percent of all work-related farm deaths, according to WorkSafe NZ.
