A mid-air collision between two light planes has claimed the life of two people.

A cessna 152 crashed into a farm paddock near the Feilding airfield this afternoon, both victims, from the same plane, are believed to be females.

A second cessna 152 involved in the collision managed to land safely - its pilot, a man, is understood to have suffered minor injuries.

Police spokeswoman Kim Perks told NZPA that the cause of the collision was still unknown.

“We don't know at the moment what's happened but there's obviously been some sort of incident between the two aircraft in the air,” she told NZPA.

A flight school operates from the Feilding airfield.
