Fire crews are at Christchurch International Airport after a plane's cockpit started to fill with smoke while on the tarmac.

Passengers were evacuated from the aircraft after the smoke was reported. Newshub reporter Julian Lee was one of those told to vacate the plane.

"I was onboard a flight to Wellington and I could smell some smoke and I didn't know what it was," he explained.

"Then, lo and behold, the airline crew announced the plane was smoking and we had to get off."

The Fire Service said they were told of the incident at about 7:46am, from the airport's traffic control tower.

"Fire received a call ...that a plane parked at Christchurch International Airport was showing a bit of smoke in the cockpit," a fire spokesperson said.

"We currently have two crews in attendance, working with a thermal imagery camera to find a reason."

The spokesperson said there is smoke in the cockpit, but no flames.

Fire crews and police remain at the scene.
