One person has been hospitalised, and numerous others evacuated after a massive blaze engulfed a house in Auckland's suburb of New Lynn.

Eight fire trucks attended the scene in Arawa St, New Lynn, along with two police cars.

A local resident said the fire tore through an old wooden house, with flames reaching up to 20 metres above the roof.

A specialist lighting unit had been called in to assist with the search for a missing person, however they have now been accounted for.

St John says one patient has been transported to Auckland Hospital after sustaining moderate injuries.

Homes have been evacuated on Arawa St and Great North Rd, and both homes on either side of the house have been damaged by the fire.

Neighbours have been barred from returning to their homes, and the road remains closed.
