An historic flour mill in Christchurch has gone up in flames twice in one night.

Smoke was seen coming from the rear of the abandoned Wood Brothers Mill on Wise St in Addington shortly before 10pm. A man in his 50s was later found unconscious, having lit an indoor camp fire. He was taken to Christchurch Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Crews were called back to the mill about two hours later to find a large fire on the third floor. As the building is considered dangerous, firefighters had to battle the blaze from aerial units outside.

The fire caused substantial damage.
