There are calls for people to get flu jabs to halt the spread of an H1N1 outbreak in Hawke's Bay.

One woman's critically ill with the Swine Flu virus and eight others have been admitted to Hawke's Bay Hospital's intensive care unit.

Local medical officer of health Dr Nicholas Jones is urging people to get vaccinated.

"I think it's true to say that we've seen probably more than we would've expected during the summer season," he says.

"It shows that this virus is still capable of causing some pretty serious illness."

Dr Jones says the virus has struck before the usual winter flu season.
