Businessman, philanthropist and anti-cat campaigner Gareth Morgan will host a public meeting tonight in the Wellington suburb of Karori.

Mr Morgan wants to debate plans to create the city’s first ‘confined cat’ suburb.

The wildlife sanctuary Zealandia is based in Karori, and Mr Morgan wants local residents to support the centre’s wildlife renewal work.

Zealandia conservation manager Raewyn Empson says she’s pleased the public debate is going ahead.

"We've had such success that there are now birds flying out into the suburbs, and there are a lot of people saying that they are concerned about the risks and we're seeing that there are risks out there,” she told the New Zealand Herald.
