Good Samaritan finds a small fortune

The countdown is on for whoever lost a substantial amount of money in Mt Eden to claim it.

Avondale police say an "honest" person handed in an amount of money "in the many thousands of dollars" around 4pm on Saturday.

They're not releasing the exact amount that was handed in or where it was found and haven't been able to find who it belongs to.

If the rightful owner doesn't come forward in 90 days, the person who found it will get to keep the money.

Acting area commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff praised the person for handing the money in.

"A very honest member of the public found it, picked it up and spent a bit of time trying to see if anyone in the immediate vicinity was missing it.

"It's nice to know that there are good people around like this, this is a very large sum of money that has been handed in," he says.

Anyone who thinks they own the money should call Balmoral police on (09) 631 1000 between  8am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
