Good teachers need recognition - think tank

A new report into New Zealand schools puts us on a par with countries like Kazakhstan and Slovakia.

The report from right-wing think tank the New Zealand Initiative says teacher quality is the most important in-school factor influencing student achievement.

It says we need to do more to recognise the importance of good teachers.

Former Auckland Grammar School headmaster and report author John Morris says New Zealanders are afraid of discussing teacher quality because it raises the spectre of performance pay, which many oppose.

He appeared on Firstline this morning to explain.
