State Highway 1 has reopened following a head-on collision south of Paekakariki.
Emergency services in Wellington responded to the incident, where three people were injured.
Police reported that the driver of the northbound vehicle was airlifted to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.
Two passengers from the other vehicle sustained only minor injuries, and did not require any medical attention.
