Homecoming for Kiwi artist Francis Upritchard

London-based Kiwi artist Francis Upritchard is back where it all began.

She is in New Zealand exhibiting at the Ilam Campus Gallery at University of Canterbury, where she graduated in 1997.

Ms Upritchard has exhibited her work around the globe, including representing New Zealand at the Venice Biennale in 2009 -- the world's largest and most prestigious international contemporary art exhibition, attended by over 30,000 key curators, writers and collectors, over three days.

Lisa Reihana has been chosen to represent New Zealand for the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017.

Ms Upritchard's exhibition Dark Resters is named after her nephew's guinea pig.

The work is all made in New Zealand, with the help of master potter Nicholas Brandon in New Plymouth.  Materials like possum pelts, faux gems and bespoke oversize glass bottles are mashed together to come up with "idiosyncratic" sculptures and lamps.

Ms Upritchard says it's great to be back in Christchurch, especially after the earthquake, and while being back on campus was strange it was "lovely" to bring new art to the university.

Dark Resters is open to the public from today to April 21 at Ilam Campus Gallery Block 2, School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury.
