The Māori Party has announced the candidate they hope will win them back the Te Tai Hauāuru seat in next year's election.

Former league star Howie Tamati will contest the seat, which is currently held by Labour MP Adrian Rurawhe.

Mr Rurawhe won the seat in the 2014 election after seat founder and former Māori Party leader Tariana Turia, who held the seat for 12 years, retired.

Mr Tamati says he's extremely proud to have been selected.

"I have got reach, I'm well-known, my profile's very high, both locally and nationally. I think I can lend that to the Māori Party," says Mr Tamati.

He says it will be a challenge shifting the Labour Party.

"They've got a big machine and they're very skilled, but I believe that we can get the numbers. I've got about a year to go.

"It's very important that I meet the people out there, understand what they need, and get them to have confidence in me doing the job for them."

While best known for his sporting feats, Mr Tamati also has a strong background in local government, serving 15 years on the New Plymouth District Council.
