Ice causes crashes, closes roads in south

Ice is causing havoc on the roads in the South Island, with State Highway 6 south of Nelson closed after two crashes.

Emergency services are at a motorcycle crash in the area of Spooners Range, south of Nelson, and police are on their way to a rolled car in the Motueka Valley.

It's not yet known if anyone has been injured. The road will be opened once it's deemed safe to drive.

Drivers are urged to take extreme care when driving this morning, police say, particularly in rural areas.

Further south, chains are no longer required on Arthur's Pass and the road is fully open, with no restrictions.

There have been multiple ice-related incidents across the Wakitipu Basin, and drivers should take extra care around the Queenstown Lakes area. There have already been accidents on the Lower Shotover, Arrow Junction, Macdonnell Road and Arthurs Point.

Milford Rd (SH94) may get snow about the tunnel before turning into rain. Another two to four centimetres is possible between midnight tonight and dawn tomorrow, with further snow Thursday afternoon.

Drivers are urged to drive with extreme care on SH6 and SH6A between Queenstown and Crown Range Rd because of ice.
