Police have now revealed the identity of the deceased man found at a residential address in Rotorua on Tuesday afternoon.
Ian Walter White, 58, was found at his home at around 4:30pm on Tuesday. His death is being treated as suspicious by police.
"At this stage it is not clear exactly what has occurred so we are keeping an open mind and are talking to a number of people to help build a picture of his movements and anyone he might have interacted with prior to his death," District Field Crime Manager, Detective Senior Sergeant Lew Warn said in a statement.
"Our thoughts are with Mr White's family as we continue with our investigation into the circumstances of his death," Mr Warner said.
A post mortem is scheduled for Thursday. It is expected to reveal more about what happened to Mr White.
