An investigation is underway into the death of a man while he was test driving a hovercraft in West Auckland.

The 40-year-old was operating the hovercraft - which he built from a kitset - for the first time when something went wrong with the engine. He was decapitated in front of his partner when a blade struck his head.

The incident occurred around midday Sunday.

Police are being assisted with their inquiries by an engineer who is a hovercraft expert.

“He’s going to come in and have a look at the device and tell us what his feelings are about how it has been built and everything else… how it failed and why it failed,” says Sergeant Colin Nuttall.

No licence is needed to buy or fly a hovercraft in New Zealand.
