Federated Farmers is dubbing today "pro-1080 day", in an effort to counter protests against the use of the pest-control pellets.

Around 150 protesters gathered in Te Anau yesterday to oppose the Department of Conservation's (DoC's) use of the poison near public tracks and walkways.

Federated Farmers national president William Rolleston says farmers want to balance up the issue.

"Kiwis should get out and enjoy the outdoors, appreciate the good work that DoC is doing in terms of trying to save native birds, and also that the use of 1080 [helps] to reduce the incidence of diseases like tuberculosis," he says.

Mr Rolleston says police should investigate threats and intimidation against DoC staff and hold the protesters to account.
