Labour takes aim at convention centre's pillars

Labour's latest gripe with SkyCity's downsized international convention centre is that it will have pillars which will block views and get in people's way.

The casino giant unveiled its new design earlier this week, which is 10 percent smaller than promised.

Labour MP David Clark says there's been a compromise in the main event space too.

"They've cut costs by removing the requirement for a pillar-free space," he told RadioLIVE. "It was one of the basic requirements and principles that the Government negotiated."

Mr Clark says the bones of the building will be on display for all to see, impacting its functionality and infuriating people who end up seated behind them.

"In the main plenary space we now hear there will be pillars, the overall centre is smaller. It is not the iconic, world-class convention centre that was pitched to New Zealanders."

Prime Minister John Key says the new design looks "spectacular".

Even with the downsizing, the budget for the centre has increased from $408 million to $430 million.
