Lifeguard patrol hours reduced to weekends

The Surf Life Saving season is winding down, with the northern region wrapping up 18 of their 24 weekday patrols.

Piha, United North Piha and Muriwai will still have lifeguards operating during the week and weekends until Easter -- March 18.

Bethells Beach patrol guards will remain on patrol until February 26 and Raglan will operate during the week until February 19.

Surf Life Saving Northern Region says their lifeguards have worked more than 63,000 hours this summer and rescued more than 450 people.

"We have yet another busy season, the lifeguards have worked tirelessly to prevent injury and drowning on patrolled beaches and it has really paid off," says regional lifeguard supervisor Chase Cahlane.
